After more than four (4) years, a new franchise bill for media giant ABS-CBN Corporation has been filed at the House of Representatives.
This comes after Albay Rep. Joey Salceda filed House Bill 11252 seeking to give the Lopez-owned media giant a new 25-year franchise to construct, install and maintain a free TV channel as well as on free radio.
In the bill's explanatory note, Salceda said that the accusations thrown against ABS-CBN including "not paying taxes" are proven false and did not violate ownership restrictions.
Salceda also added that the loss of ABS-CBN's franchise created a big gap in spreading information across the country, citing the network's wide reach.
The House of Representatives' Committee on Legislative Franchises junked ABS-CBN's franchise renewal in 2020 under the vindictive administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is being haunted now by accusations of human rights violations.
